First potato seedling results

Well it is the end of another year, and the end of the mild weather. From tomorrow it looks like the temperatures are becoming true summer temps. Saturday is supposed to be in the 40s. I am not looking forward to it but at least it has been nice so far with milder weather between the higher temps.

I dug my potato seedlings from last year to see how they went. Unfortunately I lost some plants and tubers due to wind blowing down the pots so I only ended up with four seedlings. They were seedlings of the varity 'Asol'.

When the seedlings died down in winter I took out the little thumbnail sized tubers (the seed was planted late so the little seedlings didn't put on much growth) and planted them out in a bed in four rows. All of the tubers are still small so will need another year to grow out to truly see what they are like.

One of the rows didn't make it.

Far left - I got two tubers from this seedling. They are a bit like Kipfler in shape. Nice smooth skins and yellow flesh. One of the plants didn't grow well and had an ants nest at the base which is why the tubers are very small.

Middle - three tubers/plants grew from the original sedling. As you can see the resulting tubers were bigger but covered in scab which is odd since no potatoes have been grown there before and none of my other potatoes have any sign of scab. It just goes to show that these pathogens are already in most soils and will show when anything that is prone to them will show.
I will be destroying these potatoes as I don't want plants prone to disease.

Right - only one little tuber survived but the results are good. The tubers are roundish and smooth with yellow flesh.

I am going to try and find a supplier of true potato seed as I love growing them and finding out what I will get.

Celtuce, oca and the last of the berries

It was blowing a gale all day today, combined with a few showers, altogether not a day where I felt like doing much work outside.

 I picked the last of the celtuce seeds. I will let the tops dry in this tub for a week or two then clean the seeds. Lettuce seeds (Celtuce is a type of lettuce grown for its juicy stem rather than for the leaves) are a bugger to clean so I may end up leaving them a bit longer.

I love celtuce not only for eating but also because they are easy to grow all year round.

Today I picked the last of my raspberries and blueberries. It is sad to see the end of them, the season is so short.
I will get a small flush of extra raspberries in autumn but it won't be much.

I am continually surprised that my two blueberry bushes even survive here in my alkaline soil but they are looking healthier than ever this year. I do give them a handful of sulphur each spring which helps with the soil.
I really should take some cuttings and grow some more.

I did get out and start potting up this years crop of seedling oca. I am hoping for some amazing new varieties this year though I won't be able to choose the best till they grow out fully next year.
My bed of seedlings from last year are looking and growing really well so I will be able to see if there are any in that lot worth naming as a new variety. I doubt it though because I only got 7 seedlings and the chance of a better one is remote with that small amount. It is fun though

I am going to try growing a lot more potatoes from seed if I can find someone who can sell me some true potato seed. We are a bit limited in varieties in Australia but there are so many hundreds of varieties overseas that I am a bit jealous.
Oh well, I will try me hardest to get one or two more interesting coloured varieties out there in the next few years.

It's all about the beans

I hope you all had a great Christmas. My present was a lovely cool day so I didn't have to go out and water.

I am growing four kings of beans this summer. Not normal runner types as they don't handle our summer heat though. I am not a bean eater (except I love baked beans from the can) but people love to buy different kinds of colourful bean seeds so I will build up my stocks as I go for sale on my market stalls.

 My dwarf red snake beans are just flowering now and already have a few little beans growing. These beans only grow into a little bush but produce long, very thin beans that taste milder than the 'usual' green beans, and they don't have strings.

My green climbing snake beans are only just starting to climb now so they don't have any flowers on them yet.
Snake beans are actually a type of cowpea and hail from Africa so they handle heat well.
I wanted to grow a lot of these this year but birds kept pulling them out and I had to replant three times, and I still only ended up with enough plants for seed only.
Next year I will start them off under bird mesh.

Here is one of the first beans from my Blue Speckled Tepary beans.
These are little, semi-bush plants that produce heaps of tiny, speckled beans for drying. They are only small but the size of the bushes and amount of beans make them worth growing, especially since they are fairly drought tolerant and cope with the heat.

The tiny mauve flowers are so cute. These are a good bean for little gardens and people who don't eat a lot of beans.

The last type of bean I am growing is Madagascar beans. These don't like the heat but I have them growing on an eastern facing wall so they get afternoon shade. They did well here last year.
These are a large bean with lots of purple spots on them. They are not huge producers but the size of the beans make up for it a bit.
I don't have a pic of them right now as they are not yet flowering.

Oh my gourd, its that time again!!

My giant kettle gourd I grew last year has finally dried out and is ready for work. It was too slow drying to be able to get its seeds and plant them so that is for next year. These gourds are so big that each plant can only produce one fruit.

I decided to make another ornamental vase with this one with an oak design.

I spent sunday drawing the design. It is an autumn design with autumn oak leaves and acorns.

The leaves and branches will be coloured in after all the carving is done.

I have started the first cutting out of the design which should be finished in a couple more days.
Then comes the carving of all the individual leaves, branches and acorns, with a couple of dragonflies added in for some interest.

Then I will partially colour it in with water pencils, finish the other decorations and seal it. Boy this is a big project.

I love the look of the natural dried gourds so I don't paint them, just let the natural colours show through.

I love working with gourds as anyone can make things out of them, you don't have to have a lot of tools or skill. I didn't put many in this year as the plants grow so big and use so much ater that I can never get my money back on the fruits, they are just not cost effective, so I am just growing them for myself, with a few left over to sell or decorate my stall tables with.

I can already tell that this is going to look spectacular when it is finished.

Growing scorzonera

I was happy with the market in Portland on Friday evening, a lot of the town came out and although I didn't sell as much as I had hoped, there was a lot of interest in my unusual veggies. It is a long way to travel but I think I will go there more often even though I won't be making much profit. I really don't have a choice now that the Mt Gambier markets are out now. I have to explore other markets and they are all small as all the towns around here are small.

My seed bed of scorzonera are starting to make seeds now. I was looking forward to this as I seem to have lost my jar of seed.

I love scorzonera, it is mild and tasty, easy to grow, and best of all, perennial - you can leave it in the ground to dig up whenever you like, then replant the tops for more, but smaller and uglier roots later.

There was only one other flower out when this one opened so some of the seeds are not filled. You can tell if the seeds are filled because they are hard, thick and ribbed!!

I have to point out that you must know your audience when you say something like that or they might get the wrong idea, lol. I remember once I commented on a persons moon and stars watermelon on a forum. I congratulated her on her big moons as my watermelons only had stars last year. One of the guys piped up and said that being a guy he would not be able to congratulate someone on their moons.
Ahhh, plant people.

Anyway, scorzonera is best cooked simply. It tastes like artichoke hearts so needs only a mild dressing so it is not overpowered. I like it steamed and served with melted butter but you could also serve with a white sauce or garlic butter.
Of course you have to get over the idea that it looks like old sticks, but that is not hard for us plant explorers to do. You can peel it to make it look nicer but I don't bother any more, the skin is not noticeable in the mouth.

Hopniss and finger limes again

It was wonderful today, we had some welcome showers adding up to 13ml of rain. I didn't have to go out to water this afternoon.

I collected three lots of seed today, white Russian kale, rainbow silverbeet and the very last of the crimson flowered broad beans. I have quite a few beds to resow now and will work out what I am going to put in tonight. I guess some more carrots (I have to get some growing if I put enough in, surely), Beetroot and kohlrabi. Maybe I will also plant some of the left over oca and chinese artichoke plants I have left over in pots so they don't get wasted.

My hopniss (Apios americana, or American groundnut) is growing very well this year, it has certainly helped to grow it up vertical strings rather then the horizontal strings I tried last year.

I have three beds now, one to harvest each year for the biggest tubers. One of the beds has nothing for the plants to grow on, I am seeing how well they grow just sprawled along the ground.

My single finger lime that set fruit this year is looking very good even though it is still such a small plant. It hasn't dropped any fruit so far so I might get a good harvest later. The fruit are filling out nicely.

This is a green variety. Finger limes come in a range of colours, both in skin and flesh colours. I have a pink, green and purple. The colour will show when the fruit are ripe.

Tomorrow afternoon I am going to attend the evening market in Portland. I really hope I do well as I am getting sick of barely coming out even with no profit that I have had in the last half dozen markets. Now that my vegetables are harvestable I should be getting better takings. I will have a full van load of produce as well as a tray or two of plants. I need a bigger van as the tables and marquee take up half the space. I need to win tatts, hmmm.
For some reason, this year people haven't been as interested in the plants I have had to take lately. I think it is because I have had to go to markets in small and conservative towns where people don't like to try new things.

My main market in Hamilton doesn't have a January market so I can't wait till February. For the moemnt I am just going to have to muddle through with other random markets. At least there seem to be a few more around at this time than there were last year.
I have a heap of beds of veg to harvest so I have to keep selling so they don't go to waste. I have kale, Portugese cabbage, white beetroot, kohlrabi, silverbeet and rhubarb to name a few.

Tamarillos and alpine strawberries

Ok, so now that my open day and survival course are over I can finally get back into working on the blocks. It is going to be cool for the next few days so I will be busily weeding as the weeds are getting a bit out of control. I spent 10 hours out weeding today and cleaned up a lot. My arms are heavy and sore from hoeing. At least with the heat of summer yet to come in force I don't have to get rid of every weed as they will be burnt off before long.

I am a bit worried that the melons are not setting fruit yet, they have barely any female flowers. They are growing so slowly this year that I am wondering what is wrong as the weather has been great for them. At least we have a long growing season so there is still plenty of time.

 As my regular readers will know, I have been worried about my tamarillos not setting fruit, well, a couple of days ago I was happy to note that one of the shrubs is finally setting.

I love tamarillos, they are delicious and the plants are quite ornamental too. To me they taste like a mix of kiwifruit and passionfruit, I can't get enough of them. It is a pity that they don't suit our weather here with the frosts in winter and heat of summer but they are doing well tucked under a couple of trees for shelter.

They are getting quite big and lanky so I will have to remember to go and tie them to the fences so they don't get blown down in the wind, especialy with a load of heavy fruit on them. Already I have lost a couple of branches as they are very fragile.

I LOVE my bed of white alpine strawberries. The people who attended my open day were equally rapt, they were all fighting for room under the shadecloth hunting for them.

The white ones are sweeter with a more intense flavour than the red and are a favourite of anyone I give them too. I'm glad they are too soft to take to market, more for me, lol.

They are covered with fruit at the moment.

Back again and exhausted

Well, I am back from taking some guys on a survival course out in the forests around here. We got back yesterday afternoon, a day early because a couple of them had very sore feet. When I tell people what to bring I will have to make it clear that they are compulsory, not just suggestions. The guys turned up in very unsuitable footwear.

At least they seemed to enjoy the experience and I refunded them for the unused day so I think they went away happy, but exhausted and sore.

Here are the guys on the second day with empty bellies after finally working out a way to open a can of tuna without any can opener or tools.

That was probably the best tasting can of tuna they have ever eaten.

They days have been warm so after I got back I had to go and water everything. I was expecting all the veg to be wilted but although some were starting to feel the heat they had stood up to three days of heat without water very well. I think I am watering everything too well and can probably lessen it a bit.

I am heading off to a small market tomorrow to try and sell some of the potted plants that didn't get sold on my open day. I have a heap of veg ready to harvest but I just don't have enough room in the van to take both. There is a market on in Portland next weekend so I will take veg to that one.

Turnip cabbage review

Well, I had my open day today and I am exhausted. Only half as many people turned up as I expected, half as much as told me they were coming. Oh well it was still a great day and I think everyone went home pleased.

Unfortunately I was so busy talking that I forgot to take any pictures. I hope I can get some from someone else.

I picked one on my rare turnip cabbages (Naone Rosse Antica Trentino) to show everyone. It was still fairly small but I was keen to try it anyway.

It was heart shaped and had a lot of extra roots but I am not sure if the extra roots are normal or not until I know the variety better.

The rest I will leave to get to a more head size as in the pictures I have seen.

After tidying up I brought the cabbage in and cut it in half. It is pure white inside.

I tasted some raw and was instantly surprised by the soft and creamy texture. It tasted like a mix of cabbage and kohlrabi with an overtone of swede. It was pleasant and many people would like it.

I steamed and microwaved a couple of pieces and the swede overtone went away and the flavour was more mild. I found it very pleasant to eat even without any butter or other sauce.

I think this vegetable will go very well on my stall and am looking forward to saving some seed to offer.

Beautiful rain

I am so happy. Today it thundered and showered all day. We didn't get much rain, only 13mm (half an inch) but after my watering last night all the plants are looking very happy. A bit of natural rain makes a lot of difference.

 Here is a pic of our back yard in the rain today. I have been expecting the grass to have died off by now with the heat and dry weather but it is still hanging on. I think I will have to mow it again before it dies off for the summer.

My Chinese yams in the raised bed are growing well. next year they should be big enough to form tubules on the stems. You can also eat the main tubers but they are fragile and a hassle to dig but the stem tubules are only as big as peas but produced well and people say that a single plant can produce a bucket full. They are cooked just like peas and are supposed to taste a bit like potatoes but I haven't had a chance to try them yet.

I have got a couple more plants out in the garden. If I was growing on a heavier soil I wouldn't put them out in the beds as they would not be easy to dig up and any bit of tuber in the ground will sprout again but as I am on sand I think I should be able to get the tubers out well.

lastly here is a picture of some of my dried gourds from last year, just for the heck of it.

I had a bad year and only a few plants grew so I was lucky to get any gourds at all. I was going to put in more this year but didn't get around to it so I only have 5 plants growing, or trying to grow, like my melons they are growing very slowly this year.

I must take some time to make a couple of things with these. Hmmm, I will think about it tonight.

Finger limes and high heat

I thought I would just start on this post while I am waiting for the heat to subside a bit outside. It is still 36 C outside, a temperature that wouldn't normally hit till January. Already some peoples water tanks are empty.
In an hour I will start my watering so I can be back in around 9pm when the sun sets, I really don't like to work after dark.

 Only one of my native finger limes has set fruit this year. I am not disappointed as they are still only little plants.
This one has heaps of fruit set but I expect that it will lose some as they grow. I think it ends up being a green one if memory serves.

When I first got some of these trees I thought they were probably only a novelty but I really like the fruit. They make great garnishes for all sorts of dishes and look great of crackers also.
 My chufa plants are growing gangbusters with this warm weather. It certainly helps putting them in at the right time, I was too early last year.

I have one bed dedicated to chufa and one bed where it is coming up from missed tubers from last year.
I should have put more in so I will have some to eat myself but I just didn't have enough beds. With the amount they produce I will still be able to eat some as there are not enough people here who know about them to buy them.

My grapes are flowering well now with a heap more growth than last year, they will need a good pruning in the autumn to get them trained onto the fence.

I should get a good feed this year, if I can keep them away from dad.
The two varieties I have are Pink Iona and Black Maroo.
I love Pink Iona as it has the most unusual taste, totally non grape like. Theya re seedy which I usually hate but the taste makes up for that.
Maroo is a seedless black grape that I haven't tasted yet as the plants were too scrawny last year.

Growing figs from seed

There is not much news to tell today. I have been busy weeding, again, and doing a little tidying up for my open day but not much else.

I have mentioned before that a couple of years ago I got some seed from two varieties of fig from Turkey. After a bit of an accident I have been left with only a couple of dozen young trees which is a pain as only around one in fifty seed grown fig trees (from one professional source on the internet) produce fruit without caprifigs and wasps.

One of the surprising things I have found is that some of my seedling trees have quite ornamental leaves which might be worth keeping, at least for a while, just for this quality.

It is still a couple of years away till I will know if they will produce fruit so I have time to think about what I will do with the ones that don't, which will more than likely be all of them. I could keep a couple for ornamental purposes, or graft some good fruiting wood onto them, although figs grow so easily from cuttings that I don't really need to.

I just don't know right now. I will probably just pull them out but it a fun experiment anyway..

Feijoa and zucchini mutterings

It has been perfect weather for working in the gardens, and the veggies are growing well. I have now harvested the last of the broad beans and garlic, and have replanted with all sorts of things from melons to amaranth.
I am still having trouble with things eating off all the seedlings that germinate and have found out that it is mostly sparrows doing it. I can't afford to buy bird netting for all the beds, and the storage trouble when I don't need it, so I am planting more seed than I need in the hope that I can get some crop from missed seedlings.

My seedling feijoas are 4 years old and some have started to flower this year.
As well as being pretty, the sepals of the flowers are edible and great in salads for a bit of colour.

Feijoas are one of my favourite fruits. They are delicious just scooped out with a spoon and eaten. I have never cooked with them but I assume they could be used in the same sort of recipes as apricots.
When my trees are bigger and producing more fruit I will try out some recipes.

If you want to grow your own feijoa remember to wait till the fruit falls, then store it in the kitchen for a few days till the fruity aroma develops, then they are ripe.

Here is a picture of some Gippsland Giant broad bean pods, just for the heck of it. This bean produces large pods containing large seeds which have a slightly better flavour than the common Aquadulce variety which I have usually grown up till now.

As you know if you have been reading this blog, I put in four varieties of broad bean this year and will continue to do so to give my customers a variety of seeds. So far my favourite is Crimson flowered because of the wonderful taste, even for bean haters like me.

A couple of my melons have just started flowering so soon I will be busy every morening with hand pollinating.
Some of the zucchini have also been flowering so I will be run over with them also.

Last year I grew a zuccini that turned out quite ugly so I kept some seeds just to see what the results of planting them would turn out like.
So far it looks like most of the plants will have different shaped and coloured fruits so the grandmother plant was obviously a hybrid. It is very interesting and I will take a pic of all the different fruits together later. I hope at least one is superior in taste.

There are so many zucchini vareities out there and they mostly taste the same to me so this is just an excersize in curiosity rather than a quest for a new and better variety to offer. I will keep you updated.

Sorry it has been a few days, the evenings have been so nice that I have been spending them outside instead of in here writing.
It was hot and windy today which dried out everything so much that I had to water all the seedling beds twice, morning and night. Still, everything is looking great for my open day in two weeks.
The day after my open day I have to take a group out on a survival course for four days so I will be very busy. I went to the Mount today to pick up some things for the course.

I got a call a couple of days ago asking if I would like to be the Victorian contract instructor for one of the up and coming survival course companies in Australia. They have a good reputation and I have been keeping up with them on forums for a couple of years now (and they have been keeping an eye on me) so of course I said yes. This will be a nice added income a few times a year. The company is Australian Survival Instructors:  just in case you are interested.

For the first time ever I am having a really bad time getting carrots up. Considering that they are my best sellers at markets this is becoming a real problem.

On all my blocks the carrot seedlings are being eaten off as soon as they reach about 1cm tall or so. It is really embarassing that all my carrot beds have only a handful of seedlings in them. I can't find out what is doing it but I suspect something like earwigs though there doesn't seem to be that many around.

I don't want to lay down any poison but I might have to one one bed just to see if it helps.

One of my forum friends sent me some tubers of a potato that is purple inside and out that he grew from true seed.
The plants are growing very well but there doesn't seem to be any tubers under them even though they are starting to flower. These plants are also spreading by underground stems which I haven't seen before. I am very interested in seeing what happens with these plants and if the tubers are just deeper than usual which is why I haven't felt them.
Time will tell.

Chilean guava and Jersey shallots

Apart from a little weeding and watering in the morning I didn't get much done today, though I do have to go out and water again after I finish writing this.
I picked my first cucumber today so I guess that summer is officially here :)  I am so looking forward to picking the summer veg and getting into fresh salads. Making a salad from supermarket bought veg just doesn't taste the same.

My Chilean guava (Ugni molinae) is opening its flowers now. I love the berries on this bush but they are too small to use commercially easily, although the Tasmanians have been trying to get an industry around them going for a few years now. They are trying to sell the brand as Tassie Berries. I hate it when they do that, it is deceiving people in my view.
They are having trouble with using them commercially mainly because the berries are difficult to pick with machinery, and expensive to pick by hand

Chilean guava is a pretty, evergreen, small shrub that loves growing in the shade and is native to Chile (who would have guessed, lol). The red berries are delicious and supposed to be even better in jam, but mine will never make it into the house. This is a perfect childrens berry that they can have fun picking and eating while helping out in the garden.

Last summer I bought some 'Jersey' shallots which are a large, pink and delicious shallot.
lately they have been behaving like walking onions by putting up tiers of topsets. I am not sure this is normal for shallots so I am wondering if I got the variety wrong.

You may remember a long time ago that I was talking about these plants and how delicious they were. I am going to get rid of all my little golden shallots and only grow these I think. They taste better and are bigger, so easier to use.

I was hoping they would have started to die down by now so I could have some to sell at my open day but they are still going strong right now. I might have to cut back the watering, but it will still be too late. My open day is only just over a week away.

It is going to be a very busy week with a market, then the open day and then the day after taking a groups out on a four day survival course in the bush. I am going to be exhausted.

Elephant garlic and turnip cabbage

After a few mils of rain yesterday and a cool day today I decided to have the day off. I just went outside to take some pics for you and then went for a drive to pick out some good spots in the bush to hold a survival course for a group who got in touch to do one soon.

 Yesterday I picked my elephant garlic. Although many people don't like it because it is so mild, I always think that it is impressive and makes anyone growing it feel like a great gardener.

My garlic harvest was pretty pitiful this year as you know but at least I got a few elephant garlic plants that are worth taking photos of.

Elephant garlic is actually a type of leek with a garlic flavour. You grow it just like 'normal' garlic but it has fewer cloves in the bulbs so you have to plant many more bulbs to get a bed full. Usually it is harvested at least a month after other garlic but this year with the funny weather it is ready now.

A while ago I told you I had bought some seeds of a very old and rare vegetable from Italy (seeds available from Baker Creek Seeds) called a turnip cabbage.
They are growing strongly and are now starting to thicken the roots/stems.

This is a true cabbage that is grown for its turnip-like root rather than for its leaves. It is non-hearting and the leaves taste just like normal cabbage to me so you could use it for both purposes.
Apparantly it tastes so tender and sweet that you can eat the root raw like kohlrabi as well as cooked.

I have set aside a few plants to taste myself but the rest will be for seed.

I have noticed some variation. Most of the roots have the purple top as they are supposed to and a couple are all white so far.

Yesterday I judged the produce section of the local show. It was a disappointment with the few entries this year, for the produce as well as for all the other sections such as photography, art etc. Oh well, maybe next year will have more.

Cucumbers, yam daisies and shows

Well, tomorrow is the Casterton show and I will be judging the produce section. I wanted to encourage people to get a bit more creative with their vegetable growing so I sponsored the section to give much better prize money, asked for more categories, and offered to be the judge.
Unfortunately the main exhibitor had a medical problem earlier in the year so he probably won't be entering anything this year but I hope the better prize money entices some others to give it a go. I want people to be proud of growing their own food.

 With the earlier warm weatehr this year I have my first cucumber nearly ready already. There are a couple of zucchini flowers about to open also.

Things are going to be looking great for my open day, but there will be a few bare, just seeded beds because I have just pulled out all my garlic and most of the broad beans.
I had hoped the broad beans would last a bit longer but the severe rust problem I had just ruined them. I have cut down one bed so the roots will shoot again though.

So much for trying the yam daisies again this year. The scrawny things are dying already. They do great in pots so I tried giving them similar conditions this year with better soil, more water and shade, just like the potted ones have but it has made no difference. I don't know what to do next.

I really want to be able to grow them in beds so I will just have to keep experimenting. At least some of them grew enough to give me some seed.

Chufa and turkey rhubarb

With two hot days (tomorrow is expected to be 37 C) I have all the bed covers up and all the plants are happy. Next year I hope to have all the beds under shadecloth but at least I have enough to grow veg throughout the summer.

All the information I have says that chufa (Cyperus esculentus,var. sativus) won't survive the winter but that must be for winters that are not as mild as here.
This is chufa coming up through a kale bed. I will keep growing it in the same beds so it doesn't become a pest.
Luckily chufa doesn't produce seeds and the tubers are held close to the plant so it can become as much of a weed as its close relative Yellow Nutsedge, but I think you would not want it to get started in a lawned area just the same.

I bought a couple of young Turkey rhubarb (Rheum palmatum) plants a couple of weeks ago. This is a giant ornamental rhubarb but it is supposed to be better tasting than 'common' rhubarb.
Although the roots are used for medical purposes I am only interested in the leaf stalks for eating. I guess that because it is a large type that it would not produce as many leaves as the common variety, I am hoping that the size of the stalks will make up for that.At least it will look impressive, lol.

Scarlet Cambridge broad beans

Things are drying out so fast that even the beds with water saving crystals added are soon going to have to be watered every day if they have seedlings in them. I really hope northern Australia gets quite a few cyclones this summer so we get some rain or we might be on water restrictions.

My scarlet Cambridge broad beans are drying now and ready for picking.
Over the last month or so while I have been tasting them I thought I wouldn't grow them again as the immature beans have an unpleasant bitterness to them but now I have tasted a mature bean. The bitterness is completely absent in the mature beans so I will grow them to sell as mature cooking beans.
The mature beans are pleasant to eat and a lovely dark purple colour (not sure yet if the colour stays in cooked beans but will try that after I finish writing this), but they do have the tough skin on them that some other broad beans also have.
All my broadies are drying now so I am going to be busy podding them soon.

So far all my four varieties this year have their good and bad points:

  • Scarlet Cambridge: Bitter when immature, great as a dry bean. Lovely dark purple colour. Beans are small. Average producer.
  • Crimson: Beautiful pink/red flowers. Very high producing. Delicious as a raw green bean. Small pods. Some problem with plants rotting at the base. Beans skins are not tough.
  • Aquadulce: Very popular all rounder. Prone to rust.
  • Gippsland Giant: Big beans. Average producer. Beans skins are not tough, no need to peel.

I always put in a couple of rows of broad beans for one of my block owners but she has trouble picking them as they get so tall and fall over so this year I planted them in late winter instead of Autumn and they are just three feet tall and easy to pick. They are a bit later than the Autumn planted beans but that just extends the season.
Most of my broad beans are finished already because of the early season and a big rust problem so I think I will do this extended planting every year and get a longer picking season. Having smaller plants also means that they are not falling onto neighbouring beds and being a pain in the butt.

Even though it is so dry I am pleased at how everything is growing. All the blocks will be looking great for my open day next month.
I have been on Ebay to buy a heap of row markers so people can easily see what is planted there, I just hope they get here on time. Postage from overseas has been very slow lately.

 My tamarillos weren't affected by the couple of frosts over the last week and they have heaps of flowers on them. I just might actually get some fruit off them this year.
They are three years old now so if they don't produce fruit I will take them out and replace with something else. I believe that the high summer temps we get here is a reason they don't fruit well but since they are flowering a bit earlier this year I might miss the hottest weather and get lucky.

I love tamarillo fruit. to me they taste like a mix of passionfruit and kiwifruit. If mine fruit this year I will see if I can get a yellow or orange variety as well.

Tamarillos are native to the Andes and in the same family as tomatoes. The leaves are large and furry. Most references say the leaves smell like mice but to me they smell like popcorn.

A new veg for this year is Tronchuda kale (or Portugese kale). It is supposed to be better in the heat than other kale, and the leaves are more tender and juicy.

It is growing well right now and I have it under netting to keep off the white butterflies, but something is still eating them. I think it is snails.

I don't have very sensitive taste buds and for me they taste just like other kale. I think it will be a hit with leafy vegetable lovers though as the leaves are definitely juicier.

General update and 'can you plant seeds from hybrids?'

A couple of nights ago we had an unexpected frost which killed all of my pumpkins and much of the zucchini and some melons. Luckily everything that I had under row covers weren't touched. At least that answers the question of whether the covers are useful against frost.

Since there is another frost forecast for tonight I will wait till tomorrow to replant the seeds. At least with our long growing season I still have plenty of time to get them growing again, but it is a bother.

 Just as a matter of curiosity, I planted 5 cloves of garlic upside down, and another 5 sideways to see if they grow.

I am pleased to announce that they still grow and form good bulbs.
As they grew they tipped themselves sideways which meant that they grew close to the surface, and looked a bit odd but they performed better than I expected.
In the top pic you can see the bulb some distance from the top growth as the stem grows in a U shape.

This means that if I get my large block planted next year I will be able to make holes for them and just drop them in without having to make sure all the cloves are the right way up. This will save a lot of time and effort, as well as my knees.

Can you plant seeds from hybrids?

All over the internet and in books and forums everyone is warned that you cannot plant seeds from hybrid vegetables. Why?

Of course you can. Apart from some hybrids that have pollen sterility like hybrid carrots and brassicas (these are bred not to produce pollen so they won't produce seed) you can let hybrid vegetables go to seed and save the seeds. Just so you know, if a seed packet has F1 next to the name it is a hybrid.

In some cases the seedlings from your saved seed will not look entirely like the parents, but do you need them to? Take 'Zephyr' zucchini for example. It is a hybrid that has two different looking parents so if you save the seed from a Zephyr zucchini you may get plants with many fruit colours and shapes but they will still all taste like zucchini.
I actually have a breeding project going at the moment to de-hybridise 'Zephyr' so I can offer open pollinated seeds to my customers which will breed true.

Or some seeds saved from hybrids will look exactly like their parents. If you grow a hybrid butternut pumpkin you will get seed that will grow butternut pumpkins. In this case the hybrid is the result of two different lines of butternuts, one parent might be resistant to a certain disease and the other a variety/line that has a certain growth pattern, but they are still both butternut pumpkins.

Really, the only people who need true variety seeds/plants are commercial growers who need to be sure that what they are growing will grow, flower and ripen at exactly the same time for harvest. If they had seeds from hybrid plants the genetic variety would mean that the plants would not be exactly the same which would cause harvesting problems.

Saving seeds from hybrids does not mean that what you grow will be inferior. Take apples for another example, there are heaps of seedling trees on the sides of the roads that have great fruit. They might not be the same as the next tree on the road but that does not mean they are all inferior. Some are but most of the roadside apples I have tasted have been the sort of fruit trees that I would happily have in my garden.

To sum up, it is fine to grow varieties that come true from seed but it is not necessarily bad to grow hybrid seed, it will usually be just as good as the parents, even if it doesn't always look or taste exactly the same.

Harvesting garlic

Yesterday I decided to take the day off since it was very windy and a bit showery, not the sort of day I enjoy working in, so I didn't post like I should have. The wind came up while I was away in the morning, and it was too sudden to put the bed covers down. When I got back I figured they would have all blown down and couldn't do any damage while they were on the ground so I waited till this morning to put all them back up.

There wasn't as much damage as I expected which was pleasing so I quickly popped them up as I did my morning inspection.

 I noticed yesterday that my very expensive and valuable Bambara beans had started to germinate. I found 6 up yesterday but something ate two of them last night, bummer. I hope a few more germinate now.

I tried growing these last year but didn't do much good so I hope my new experience means that I actually get some seeds this time as I doubt that I will be able to get any more seeds.

These are a very nutritious legume from Africa that produces its pods underground like peanuts. They are supposed to do well on poor and dry soil.

Today I pulled a few of my Monaro Purple garlic bulbs and found that the roots and outer wrappers are starting to rot so even though I would have liked a lot more time between cutting the flower scapes and harvest I decided to harvest both beds of them now so I at least get some sort of harvest. They were ready to harvest as half the leaves were dead so it was best that I didn't wait any longer.

At least by having a very poor garlic year this year I hope that next year when I put in my half acre I might have a good year.

Here is a pic of the harvest from one of my beds. The bulbs look ok here but they are actually half the normal size for this variety. I also dug a couple of other small plots of other varieties so I only have my elephant garlic and two other garlic varieties in the ground as they are not ready yet. I think another three weeks and they will be ready.

Today I got my insurance sorted for my open day in December. Actually it was easier to get a hobby farm insurance policy that also includes market selling so I can drop my market insurance that I pay a bit over $300 per year and have a hobby farm business insurance for $500 per year. This will cover my market selling as well as the open day and also all my public liability for all my blocks.
I was having trouble getting liability insurance until I found a great broker on a small business forum who asked a lot of questions and did some great research for me. It was much easier than calling individual insurers who just didn't want to know. I guess the way I do business was just too hard for them but a broker needs all the business they can get and tries harder.

Hosta and garlic bulbils

Sorry for not updating this blog for a few days. With the nice weather we have been having lately I have been out till dark working and I just don't want to bother updating when I get in tired. I might have to start doing it when I come in for a break during the day.

 I have bought a few hosta plants to see if they are worth growing as a vegetable. I am impressed with my first taste today. The shoot was very tender and tasted like a cross between green bean and asparagus.
You should pick the shoots when they are young and still furled because they go a bit bitter when they are more mature. I think they will be nice in a leafy green salad.

Apparently they can also be cooked. When I have a few spare shoots (the plants are still small) I will try them steamed with my other vegetables.
I have noticed that where I grew chufa last year there are a few shoots coming up from tubers that were left in the ground. I was under the impression that they don't survive winters but that must be for places with harsh winters because I already have a half dozen up.

I will have to keep an eye on that because even though they don't flower and aren't as much of a weed as nutgrass, they could still be a potential problem if not controlled. I will keep you informed.

All that I have read online and in books about garlic bulbils is that they don't start to produce cloves for two or three years but these Monaro Purple bulbils that I threw in a tub in the autumn are producing cloves already.
Of course the ones that are crowded where I just threw the head in the ground only have the outside ones big enough to do this but the individual ones are bigger.

Just another reason to love this variety. With this advantage I will be able to build up my stocks quickly.
